Overview
In the early part of the last millennium, the Tower was the first thing most visitors glimpsed of London. It was also the last thing some people saw, before they met the gallows. In this tradition (minus the public hanging), you should make a special effort to visit the Tower of London, no matter how long your stay in the capital.
The site was occupied by Romans before William the Conqueror built his fortress there in the 11th century – there are Roman ruins on the grounds to this day. The fortress was the first in Europe, and then the first palace and the first prison, when extensions and a moat were added to the fort in the next century.
Henry VIII’s daughter Elizabeth (later Elizabeth I) was imprisoned there. The Crown Jewels were hidden there. Lions, bears and, to this day, flightless ravens were kept there. And it is home of the Beefeaters, also known as Yeoman Warders, who keep the peace. Getting the theatrical guided tour is the only way to go.
